4 Ways to Moisturize Your Hair

vscocam173Curly/kinky hair is naturally drier than straight hair--which can make it harder to grow than straight hair. This is due to the fact that its more difficult for the oils to travel down our hair strands since our hair is so curly. As a result, our ends hardly get any love. They get dry and brittle and then break off and split. So we must moisturize constantly. Below are several ways to do so!

1. Deep Condition

One of the best ways to moisturize your hair is by deep conditioning. I deep condition once a week using the Huetiful Hair Steamer. I love this thing! It penetrates your conditioner into your scalp 5x more than your conditioner would without it! I have been using Shea Moisture’s Deep Treatment Mask for about 6 months now. It works very well. I also love Curl Junkie’s Curl Rehab conditioner. You can see the difference in your curls right after you use it. I have used Karen’s Body Beautiful Luscious Hair Mask as well, but it didn’t give me great results for the price. However it got GREAT reviews and a lot of people really love it, so it really depends on your hair and I think it is worth a mention! And finally I just tried Trader Joe's Nourish Spa Organic Conditioner. It is ahhhmaaazing! It made my hair super soft and my curls defined and shiny! Even at 3 day hair!! I'm loving it! Anddd its only $2.99!!!

2. Protective Styles

Protective styles do a really good job at keeping your hair moisturized! This winter my hair started getting super dry because of the cold weather and lack of humidity. So I KNEW I needed to get a protective style for a few weeks. I got a sew-in weave for 6 weeks. It was almost a full weave, but I had a tiny bit out in the front. This helped keep my hair moisturized because my hair wasn't being exposed to all the dry, cold wind and air. When I took it out my hair was super moisturized and the curls were more defined!

3. Apply Minimal Heat

I'm not #teamnoheat--I love a good blowout and I use it to stretch my hair. But I am very careful when I do apply it to my hair. Applying too much heat will take all the moisture out of your hair, so if you straighten your hair often and you find it becoming really dry, stop using heat for a little bit!

And finally, moisturize your hair with WATER! Duh! *Smacks forehead*. When I found this out I thought, "why didn’t I think of this??" I bet if you look up the word moisturize, the definition would have water somewhere in it, right? Haha it makes TOO much sense. We spend so much time moitizeriing with so many gooy, oily products when we can just use pure water. So I try (but sometimes fail) to section my hair and put water on it every night. Then, I seal it with aloe vera juice. You could use argan oil, olive oil, and many other types of oils depending on what works best for you. But the purpose of this is to seal in the water so that the moisture doesn’t seep out. While doing this, make sure you pay special attention to your ends. When my hair has been exceptionally dry, I have moisturized with both water coconut oil. This is especially important during the cold winter months. If you can do this in the morning too, that is even better. However I can’t because that would make my hair frizzy the entire day.

Happy moisturizing!
